Building of a Slum School – BoSS PROJECT – 1st Phase
Period: 12 Months
Donation 1st Phase: $150,000

From Ghetto to Glory, Daystar the beacon of hope, offering school – readiness for slum dwellers!

The BoSS project is the brainchild of Daystar Junior School which is set in the epicenter of two slums of Kampala Capital City of Uganda: Kirombe and Katwe. Started in 2015, Daystar has grown from 192 enrollment (2015) to 923 (2023). The school serves poor and low income families(singles mothers), orphans, disadvantaged children. The school offers Early childhood education and Talent Development.
Globally, UN-HABITAT reveals that by 2050, 70% of the world population will live in cities. In their landmark publication “Africa’s Cities: opening doors to the World”, World Bank 2017) distilled its research on African cities into the 3C challenges i.e., African cities are Crowded with many people i.e. unlivable; Congested with buildings; and Constrained in accessing investment capital. World Bank revealed that many of Africa’s urban workers live in crowded quarters near the city. The reason for this crowding is that most people must live near the downtown district or industrial zones if they hope to work. They cannot conveniently commute from outlying areas, because little or no affordable transportation is available. Slums are workers’ only option when economic density is low but highly concentrated.

Problem: High enrollment Rate:
The high and rising enrollment rate which was caused by Covid-19 Lockdown where schools were closed for two years in Uganda. When schools were reopened in 2022 many learners joined school due to the two year gap without schools operating. This is the reason why Daystar is seeking for support to scale up in order to accommodate the increasing numbers of the children.
Over 5 million people in Uganda live in slums with more than 4 million 90% living in Kampala. Many of these cannot afford early childhood education for their children; let alone pay for scholastics in the public schools.

BoSS Project Description: Access to Early Learning
“BoSS” short for Building of a Slum School, is a brainchild of Daystar Junior School located in Kirombe slum village, Nsambya Makindye Division of Kampala city Uganda. The school serves a catchment area of two huge slums; Kirombe and Katwe. The BoSS Project is designed to continue promoting early talents from an early age. The project contributes to National Development priority Goal #5 of Uganda’s Vision 2040 – Human Capital Development; in the aspect of increasing access to education. This project will contribute to the social and economic development of Uganda by developing young Ugandan artists into resourceful and productive citizens. If their children do not attain a good education, they will be hopeless and unable to compete on the global marketplace of ideas and jobs.

Justification: 10,000 slum Children
Globally, slums are a hotbed of all things wicked: abuse, brutality, criminality, defilement, and evil agendas. Ghettos are known to attract and collect the scum of the city but there are children trapped in this whole milieu; many are born to uneducated single mothers who have to ply the sex trade or the criminal pathways to make ends meet. Many of these children live in the same household with their mother but have different fathers. For many of these children, school is the only escape from the harsh realities of hunger, child prostitution and abuse.
At Kampala City level, with a population of over 5 million people; there are 5 known slum populations i.e, Kirombe, Bwaise, Katwe, Namuwongo and Kansanga. Daystar Junior is located at the epicenter of two slums: Kirombe and Katwe; serving families at the bottom of the city pyramid. 70% of the people living in Kampala city live in slums (UNICEF 2010) ie, 1mn+ slum dwellers. Katwe II is one of the largest slums in Kampala; home to 35000 residents in 7500 households with average household size of 5 members. Locally, Kirombe Slum houses 1000+ households that constitute the poorest of the poor; the most vulnerable of the urban crowd. Daystar seeks to be that beacon of hope through the BoSS project.

NOTE: Each donor will be recognized by his or her name or the family name will be inscribed on the walls of the building in honor of everyone who will donate. It will serve as a daily reminder to many generations to come.
